Gay Marriage

The government has defended plans to change the status of civil partnership in England and wales to allowed marriage.
54% of people said it 'Should' and 42% of people said it 'Should not'.

'Gay' campaigners speaking their
views in this protest.
The Catholic Church in England and Wales has started an online petition with 550,000 signatures against same sex marriages.
So, the question is: Is society ready for gay marriage? Well, at the moment yes and no. Younger generations are more accepting of same sex relationships than perhaps most of their grandparents or even parents. It's becoming more socially acceptable but is not fully accepted. In a lot of ways it's similar to the battle for civil rights, things can and will improve but there will always be discrimination and prejudice towards same sex marriages, people will always fear things that are different or they don't understand.
If it does go through in 2015 then here is what the law will entail;

  • To allow same-sex couples to marry in a register office or other civil ceremony.
  • To retain civil partnerships for same-sex couples and allow couples already in a civil partnership to convert it into a marriage.
  • To allow people to stay married and legally change their gender.
  • To maintain the legal ban on same-sex couples marrying in a religious service.
