This week see's Eastbourne, potentially the best town in the country, host the AEGON championships.
Jamie Baker at AEGON championships beating Donald Young |
Jamie Baker, ranking 200th in the world, beat American Donald Young, ranked 50th in the world. Baker was at Queen's last week, but was seen off by Jo-Wilfred Tsonga comfortably and was hoping to do better this time around. When he was drew up against Donald Young, many people would have written him off.
However, against all the odds he not only beat, but thrashed the American in straight sets 6-1 6-4. The Scot lost only 5 games against the world number 50.
Baker now progresses to the second round where he will face either Philipp Kohlschreiber or Jo Soeda. The German, Kohlschrieber very recently beat Rafael Nadal, so confidence will be high.
Baker was delighted after the game saying "That's my best win in terms of ranking, no doubt about that". Also, Baker is certainly aiming high saying that he wishes one day he can climb in to the top 50, saying that if he can beat someone in the top 50, then he has the skill the be there too.
Fellow Brit, James Ward could not reach the same feat as Jamie Baker, and lost to Marinko Matosevic in three sets.
