Sony’s got a big PlayStation event planned for next Wednesday, and all the rumours point to the launch of the PS4. Now, we’ve got another branch to throw on the fire: the first image of the Sony PS4’s game controller. Is that a touchpad in the middle?
Destructoid published the image above of what’s supposedly a prototype controller for the next PlayStation – several others sources have since reported that the gamepad is legit. While the design could change slightly, it gives us a very good idea of what to expect: as we heard last month, Sony will be dropping the DualShock design it’s relied on for three generations of consoles, though the twin thumbsticks and classic button layout remain the same.
The big change isn’t the shape though – it’s the two new additions in the middle. On the top is what appears to be a PlayStation Move sensor, so you’ll be able to swing the controller like a Move wand. And just above the gamesticks is a touch pad, just like the one you’ll find on the back of the PS Vita.
Will it be more comfortable? Will it help developers come up with games that can only be played on a PS4? We’ll find out soon enough, but in the meantime let us know what you make of it in the comments below.
